Homework, you remain focus on the task. Charge forward. Get 'er done. All those things, right? Right. But, Nana takes at least 1/4 of the time longer to finish because she distracts herself. Not quite the profile of ADHD or anything just free spirit - fun lovin' Nana who gets sidetracked. It's not just with HW - it's with dinner, cleaning and sometimes when she's playing with a friend - turn around and she might be gone! :)
I started this reward system for her. She thrives on the positive feedback rather than us giving her suggestions on how to "study" better. We take breaks. Isa can do her math and reading without taking a break because she likes to get 'er done. Nana would rather spread it out. Totally understandable and do-able. We give her direct feedback right away on her work. This makes her proud and gives her the accomplished feeling she needs to tackle what is coming up next. She is ultra sensitive and wants to do well. So, we know she isn't apathetic to her work. She is diligent and hard working.
I appreciate her self awareness and that she asserts it.
"Mommy, I'm done. Do you like my handwriting? Isn't it neat?"
My first thought is "yes, but it should be" instead I say
"Nanny, it is! That is awesome work. Do you think you could write a few more details about how you're feeling in your journal so Nancy (one of her teachers) could imagine how you feel while she's reading your story?"
"Oh! Okay."
She prompts us because she needs the positive before the critiques. I'm so glad we've recognized this and can give her what she needs to be a productive proud student.

Oh! I just love that girls spirit! It breaks my heart to see her sad! She wears her emotions on her sleeves for sure, just like me. =-)
