Experimenting (Sourdough Day 1)

Oh boy! What a week it has been! Madi had some weird viral leg crampy sicky thing last week and then this Sunday (after Husband's outdoor game - where he had a HAT TRICK! Woot! Woot!) Nana fell asleep on the way home and woke up with a fever. The crazy thing about it was she was running around the soccer field with no signs of a downfall to the flu.

Don't get scared when you hear flu, c'mon really? I'm the most germ-phobia type person I know (okay, maybe Denise and I are tied) and I'm not all worried about it. Mainly because my immune system may go down and I would be more likely to get the flu. Bwhahaha! I'm kidding (sorta). I was on the internet for way too long trying to find defining symptoms between ::dun dun dun:: swine flu and the flu. PS there isn't a real way to determine the difference you have to go in and get a nose swab and infect an entire lobby with your "flu". They just give you tamaflu that will help you get over it quicker but by then you're probably past the peak stage anyways. Urgh. Okay, done ranting.

Anyway, she had high fevers Monday and Tuesday then climbed down Wednesday and today she's taking a recovery day. Yep, that's right a recovery day. The flu is exhausting and she needed one more day to rest. Plus the school tells you 24 hours of no fever and she was fever free as of 9:30am on Wednesday and school starts at 9:20am so it wouldn't have been 24 hours. Okay, okay - she's taking a Lazy Day. No harm in that right, everyone is gone anyway. Sorry, Nancy and Sue if you read this. :) It's off the record, mmmmmk?

Well, that didn't mean the house halts. Nope. Not us. Nana worked on her HW (she's almost done with her work for the week and will be back in time for her Show and Tell) and Mister worked on science. He's mastering Go, Dog, Go by Dr. Seuss and continuing the BOB series. We will be doing Art tomorrow.

I was looking at Joy the Baker's blog yesterday. Because I love it. And drool over it. Almost every day. I found Sourdough Pancakes on her blog. Which rang this bell in my heart linked to my Husband - he mentioned one of his favorite things about going to his Grandparents' house was his grandpa's sourdough pancakes. So, I thought I would play the sweet wife role and homeschool teacher all rolled into one and do it.

You start with a Starter. Yeah, Husband's grandpa must've been the shiz because this is like a 3 to 4 day stinky gurgling process. But, I'm amped for it. We started today in hopes for pancakes on Sunday. Yep. We named it too. Darth. What else?

Dev and I talked about Fermentation. Basically, we talked about how carbohydrates can be turned into certain acids (aka alcohol but I didn't want to say that) and that we were going to watch the process. Sounds fun, right? He was just excited to hear the gurgling and smell it. He asked if it smells like fart. No, seriously he asked me that. Such a B-O-Y.

We promised to feed Darth and take good care of him until he turns into a yummy pancake or bread then he'll be gobbled up (or bestroyed aka destroyed as Dev would say).

We are working on writing. He totally ignores the lines. He sees a way to execute his work so he can be done. The lesson for today was "do it right the first time or it takes you longer especially if you whine about it for 5 minutes".

Um, i forgot to mention - NANA DOES NOT HAVE THE OINK OINK FLU. at least i don't think she did. she was just fevery achy and the cold symptoms. but like i said...there wasn't a HUGE difference in the two unless i go in and get her swab which is stupid.

Oh Oh! I found an awesome homeschool preschool site for you. http://www.hwtears.com/
Handwriting without Tears. So great. Some of the teachers at Brighton use it, but I didn't realize a) they had a pre-k version or b) how inexpensive it is. The "teacher's" guide for pre-k is like $7. And it's so great. I was tempted to buy it for M, but I need to hold back on my mommy-nerdiness. He IS only 3.

I love that one of his words to practice is Darth! That is too funny! Does he understand that he will be eating Darth? I sure hope so, or I see a big meltdown in the future! =-)
