Tonsillitis

My poor son...almost immediately after I blogged about his good spirits he took a turn for the worst. He was watching the weird Dr. Seuss puppet movie and I hear him start to whimper. The whimper became a cry, the cry turned into screaming. I came over to him when he started to whimper about the sun burning his eyes. I said your fever must be back. When we were home he had a low fever 99. something and then within an hour it went to 104.7. Totally unheard of in my experience. I had talked to the doc on my way home because I was in Seattle and thought if it was Swimmer's Ear I could swing by and she could treat him. The nurse convinced me that fever's are your body's way of cooling the body down and fighting infection. DUH. I know this. I have had enough sick kids to get that point. She was a new nurse (I found out later) that doesn't know our family. Had she known our family and our history at this clinic she wouldn't have said "wait another 24 hours and if the fever persists then call us back". I thought "okay, for Swimmer's Ear I can wait another day" because like I said he wasn't having any cold symptoms and his eating was a bit less but Dev isn't a real big eater when he doesn't feel right anyway. I could go around and around about this but bottom line...I should've forced myself in the office.

Dev's whimpering, crying and screaming about the sun burning his eyes and it's too hot plus he was shaking and shivering...I just didn't want him to start seizing. Scary, right? Isa, Nana and I grab ice packs and try cooling him down while I call the doc. I was a bit freaked out at that point because I didn't know if the fever was going to keep rising before I could get him into a doc or emergancy room. The nurse I spoke with earlier didn't answer another nurse (who is very familiar with us) answered and said "Go to the nearest hospital." So, I fly the kids out of the house in every which direction. Girls at our neighbor's house (Kendie's family is great for that) and called Aunty Lori to call Kae to come get Madi at the Walk In Clinic in Edmonds. It just happened to be that Kae was getting treated in the same clinic so she was able to take Madi right away.

We walk in and they tell us it's a 2.5 hour wait. I said "his temp is close to 105, I don't think I can wait that long if he isn't responding to Tylenol." She took a look at him and called back there. We were in and out within 90 minutes. The doc said Dev was the best 3 year old patient he'd seen. :) He was good, I told him "you'd be singing a different tune if this was a well-child visit". But, he was great. He was diagnosed with severe Tonsillitis and another form of Strep Throat (I forgot what it was called) we'll know specifics when the culture grows. Daddy arrived 10 minutes before we were released. He was working down south and left immediately at 5pm.

Update on Dev today. He is watching Cars and even did his chores with the girls this morning.

Oh my goodness. You must have been terrified. So glad you trusted your instincts and persisted, even after that small setback with the first nurse.

I might need your number someday if/when I run into my first experience with an extreme temperature. I will need serious support. Just reading your story made me nervous ... that's so scary. So glad he's doing better already.

Keep us posted ... hope Dev gets totally better very soon!

thanks, Mandy! i hope he does soon too. he is good spirits-playing with the girls. they have been great about making him forget he has to stay inside all day. he actually ate today too. which is a big step for him. :)

i will give you my number. i feel like i can pre-diagnose everything especially common things like ear and sinus infections because our kids have had so many times. so for sure, call me.

you really are SuperMom! and reading about all of this really makes me wonder how my mom got through all of that. yikes! I commend your awesome skills as a mom --- not that I ever doubted you for a second ;)
