Tribe Thursday and an Anicent Cultural Experience with Soeil!

Our school has a lot of students since it's a K-8 school. They created Tribes compiled of a group students K-8 from different centers with a mentor that is not your teacher (except for Isa's case, her mentor is her homeroom teacher). The point is to get the kids to be personable with others outside of their centers. They would know kids from Kindergarten to 8th Grade, brilliant!

Last year they collectively came up for a school wide community service project with Heifer International. The kids were so passionate about it because they let them decide how they were going to help this organization. It was up to them to figure out what they could do to help others.

Amazing.

So, this year they are back at it. Isa and Nana are in the same Tribe together, they are working out a more fitting name rather than Pink Panthers so more on that. Dev is in a Tribe with another Kindergarten Teacher, Mrs. B and the name is Marshmallows. He said they built a Marshmallow Planet together and talked about what they would do on the planet together. He loved it.

The teachers put tons of thought into this and I think it's fun for them because it's not their normal curriculum. Throws a twist in their schedule which I think the kids enjoy...I know Dev did! He came home saying "we did barely any school! It was awesome!"

Nana next to her buddies from her class. I can't wait to hear about what they come up with next.

Anicent Cultural Experience with Soleil!

We have our beginning of the year Icecream Socials to get know parents and have the kids regroup as a class but Soleil also has had the tradition of a Fall and Spring Potluck. Last year they missed out on the Fall one due to Kim being a new teacher so they were working out their kinks. Spring Potluck was bittersweet as M couldn't be there due to a family emergancy.
Kim wasn't able to be there last night but...the show went on. Families brought Aztec Food to Potluck with all the other 4th, 5th and 6th Grade parents. Total success.

M giving her welcome. She had us all gather around the table. She expressed how this was to join us as a family that we all work together to create a positive learning enviroment for our children then said "as tradition, Parents - YOU GO FIRST!" WA HOO! A hot meal? Unheard of on a weekday night. Husband and I hopped right in line. Ready to go first.

Daddy trying on Madi's princess hat. He looks good in pink. :)

Games

The kids had so much fun writing their names in ancient Mayan Hieroglyphic Script. Especially, Mr. Dev.

Isa played Bul. She played against a 1st Grader who won and then they had this conversation:
1st Grader: "how old are you?"
Isa: "10."
1st Grader: "what grade are you in?"
Isa: "5th."
1st Grader: "Awesome, where's my mom?"

She was super excited to spank a 5th Grader in Bul. Isa was just happy to receive candy for losing! That was her mission. Candy. All of them driven by sugar!

Nana and Isa ran off to run around with friends so the little ones hung with us.

Always dancing. Madi was sitting there forever dancing...then, it occured to me to take a video. Dev had started whispering her secret dance moves and kept getting frustrated. They are goofballs!

I love that Isa's class has social gatherings at the start of the year!
Dev looked like he secretly wanted to bust a move with Madi. hehe
